About the Painting Named after Gen. Wm. "Billy" Mitchell, America's pioneering pre-WWII air power advocate, the B-25 medium bomber excelled in low level attack. A total of 9,816 were built by North American. Designed for the US Army Air Corps, it flew with the Navy and Marine Corps plus many allied nations. In addition to a 4,000 pound bomb load, the B-25 carried a large mix of guns that gave it enormous firepower for strafing shipping and ground targets. Launched from the USS Hornet, the B-25 gained immortality after Col. Jimmy Doolittle's daring raid on Tokyo, 18 April 1942. |
