About the Painting

Begun in prototype in 1938, the F4U-4 was one of a number of Vought aircraft to bear the name "Corsair," beginning with the 02U biplane in 1926, to the A-7 jet attack aircraft of 1965.  This painting depicts a Corsair, flown by USMC Captain Phillip DeLong, from "Checkerboard" Squadron VMA-312, bagging a Soviet-built YAK over North Korea on 12 April 1951.  DeLong was a WWII ace, shotting down 11 enemy planes in that conflict. .
